Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)

Nonsurgical Alternative to Knee Replacement

What is Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE)?

Genicular Artery Embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure used to treat chronic knee pain, particularly in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). This procedure involves the targeted embolization (blocking) of the genicular arteries, which supplies blood to the inflamed areas of the knee. By reducing blood flow, the procedure aims to decrease inflammation and alleviate pain.

GAE is typically performed in an outpatient setting by our doctor. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation. A small catheter is inserted into a blood vessel, typically in the groin or wrist, and guided to the genicular arteries using fluoroscopic imaging.

Tiny particles or microspheres are injected through the catheter to reduce the blood flow in the abnormally increased levels causing inflamed areas of the knee to block blood flow to specific areas of inflammation in the knee. By reducing blood flow, the procedure helps to lower inflammation and pain in the knee joint and reduces progressive deterioration of cartilage loss.

Indications for GAE
Chronic Knee Pain
Particularly due to osteoarthritis that has not responded to conservative treatments such as medication, physical therapy, or injections.
Non-Surgical Candidates
Patients who are not suitable candidates for knee replacement surgery or who wish to avoid surgery.
Pain Management
For patients seeking pain relief to improve quality of life and maintain mobility.
Hemarthrosis
For patients who have bleeding into the knee joint either before or after knee surgery.

Benefits of GAE

  • Minimally Invasive: No large incisions or significant tissue disruption.
  • Pain Relief: Significant reduction in knee pain for many patients. Most patients experience significant pain relief within weeks to months after the procedure.
  • Quick Recovery: Faster recovery compared to surgical interventions. Patients can typically resume normal activities within a couple of days.
  • Outpatient Procedure: Can be performed in an outpatient setting, allowing patients to return home the same day.
