Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat fibroids that are non-cancerous growths in the uterus. It is performed in our outpatient office setting, and hospitalization is not required. This procedure is performed with local anesthesia and sedation (“twilight sleep”). During the procedure, our specialized physician trained in image guided interventions accesses the wrist or groin artery with a pinhole sized access and inserts a tiny micro catheter into the blood vessels supplying the fibroids.
Small particles are then injected through the micro catheter to seal or embolize the arteries feeding the fibroids, thereby reducing blood flow to a more normal state causing the fibroids to shrink over time and alleviate symptoms.
UFE is a minimally invasive procedure with shorter recovery time, fewer complications, and significant symptom relief compared to traditional surgical methods.
