Prostate Artery Embolization Treatment Los Angeles

What is Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)?

Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive, non-urethral procedure designed to shrink the enlarged prostate gland. PAE shrinks the prostate by treating its blood vessels. It is performed by making a small pin size hole access in the wrist or groin artery and inserting a catheter into the artery which gives the doctor access to the artery supplying blood to the prostate.

Tiny particles are injected into the arteries that supply blood to the prostate, blocking their blood flow. This process reduces the nutrients and oxygenated blood flow to the prostate gland causing the prostate to shrink in size, relieving pressure on the urethra and reducing urinary symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

Benefits of Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE)

These minimally invasive procedures often result in shorter recovery times, fewer complications, and significant symptom relief compared to traditional surgical methods.

  • Quick Recovery: Most patients can return to normal activities within a few days to a week after the procedure, since no incision or cutting is required.
  • Effective Symptom Relief: PAE has been demonstrated to significantly improve urinary symptoms such as frequency, urgency, weak stream, and nocturia (nighttime urination).
  • Minimally Invasive: PAE is performed through a small pin size access to the wrist or groin artery without the need for surgery.
  • Preservation of Sexual Function: Unlike traditional surgical treatments for BPH, PAE has been shown to preserve sexual function and ejaculation.

For patients with chronic indwelling urinary drainage foley catheters, PAE can help with removal of the foley drainage catheter by shrinking the prostate gland.

Is PAE Right for You?

PAE is typically recommended for men who:

Have moderate to severe symptoms of BPH that do not respond adequately to medications.
Prefer a minimally invasive treatment option that avoids the risks and potential side effects of surgery.
Prostate gland enlargement too big for surgery.
Are eligible for TURP or similar procedures but prefer a minimally invasive option that doesn’t involve surgery though the penis.
Desire to preserve sexual function and quality of life.
Desire to live without need from chronic foley drainage catheters.
